10 Reasons why Canicross is good for you and your dog

(and why you should try it today)

  1. Helps strengthen the bond between you and your dog

Dogs love to be with their family and so they will jump at the chance to spend more time with you.  Although there will be other people and other dogs at a Canicross class or race it really is all about you and your furry team mate.  You are attached to each other and have to work together and communicate with each other to negotiate the trail’s and be successful.  We encourage you to praise your dogs as often as possible to help teach them the necessary cues.  Doing any activity with your dog will strengthen your bong and help make you closer but seeing them work their little socks off for you will fill you with pride and joy.

  1. Increase the Fitness of you and your dog by training together

There are so many physical benefits to Canicross running for both you and your dog:

  • Helps to build strong bones as its is weight bearing exercise
  • Strengthen Muscles
  • Improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Help lose weight or help to maintain a healthy weight
  • Great for mental health
  • Your dog will never cancel on you or make other plans – they make the best personal trainers!
  • You are both exercising at the same time together
  • Shave minutes off your current running times by having your dog safely attached to you
  1. Meet new people and make friends.

Going to a new class can be intimidating but when you come along with your dog you will already know someone and because everyone else there also has a dog you’ll have something in common straight away.  The Canicross community are a friendly bunch and we’ll always make you feel welcome.

  1. A great way to exercise dogs that cannot be let off lead

During Canicross your dog is attached to you via a bungee lead, this means you have complete control over where they are and where they are going, and you don’t have to worry about what they are eating or what they are rolling in.  It can be really challenging as a dog owner if you can’t let your dog off lead in public for whatever reasons but with Canicross you can still give them a really great exercise session while they are attached to you and have fun whilst you’re at it.

  1. Suitable for any breed of dog

As long as your dog is healthy and of a suitable age (12 months +) then Canicross could be for them!  Big or small, it doesn’t matter, we have a range of sizes of harnesses available so we have an option to fit all dogs.  Dogs love to run so this could be perfect for your dog.

  1. Perfect for high energy dogs.

Canicross is the perfect activity for dogs with lots of energy as it provides them with a job to do.  Not only is it extremely tiring for them but it’s also mentally tiring too as your dog must concentrate and work as a team with their owner to negotiate the trails.  Dogs love to run – some are even bred especially for the purpose of it so this tunes in to their natural behaviours.

  1. Canicross is brilliant for you and your dogs mental health

Running certainly is good for the body, but evidence reveals that it has many important benefits for the mind as well. Running can be a great stress reliever and can have positive influences on your attitude.  There is evidence that taking part in exercise such as running may help to alleviate symptoms of mood and anxiety disorders.  It can also be a brilliant confidence booster for both you and your dog, and you will both benefit from the ‘runners high’ which you may have heard about.

  1. Feel safe running as part of a group

Running can be a great exercise but sometimes it can be a bit scary running alone especially in the dark (even if you do have a dog with you).  But by running with a group of people all with dogs attached to them you can’t help but feel safe.  We run in all weathers and also in the dark so feeling safe is extremely important – we encourage people to wear high viz in the winter so that we can easily keep track of everybody.  We’ll also ensure we stay together as a group and never leave anyone behind.  Our team members trained in human and dog first aid.

  1. Set yourself goals and targets and push yourself out of your comfort zone

Having goals and targets in life is really important and it’s a great feeling when you reach them.  Setting goals helps to trigger new behaviours, guides your focus and help to motivate us. Whether your goal is to be able to run 5k without stopping or enter your first Canicross race we can be there to assist you. Trying anything new is always daunting at first, but once you get the hang of things and you see how much your dog loves it you’ll be flying along. Each time you step outside of your comfort zone your comfort zone becomes a little bigger.

  1. It’s fun, and you might just love it and you’ll wonder why you never tried it before
